TAFE Queensland helps William pursue a policing career

William Hunter knew from a young age that he wanted to make a difference as a police officer with the Queensland Police Service.

Driven by his passion for law enforcement, William embarked on his journey by enrolling to study a Certificate IV in Justice Studies (10971NAT) through the TAFE at Schools program in 2022.

“I decided to study this course to help me get into the police force and get an understanding of the legal system and legislation,” said William.

“TAFE at School was a relaxing but engaging environment, quite different from school in that it was more of an adulting environment that allowed me to thrive.”

While studying at TAFE Queensland's Loganlea campus in Year 11, he also demonstrated a keen interest in his studies and an admirable commitment to personal growth.

Though initially a quiet student, William’s willingness to embrace feedback stood out to his teacher, Flora Jacob, who earned him the class excellence award for most improvement.

“Flora was an amazing teacher who engaged with the entire class and encouraged everyone to participate in our classroom activities and discussions.”

His dedication to learning was evident as he steadily developed his understanding of critical subjects, including legislation, ethics, and interviewing techniques.

William attributes much of his success to the course structure for playing a pivotal role in his development.

“The classroom activities and discussions were a good way to hear other people's opinions about topics and helped as a bit of a brain break from just sitting there and studying.”

William's course equipped him with skills in applying regulatory powers, analysing social justice issues, and understanding legal frameworks.

He also gained expertise in preparing court documentation and providing justice-related advice to clients, thanks to the industry knowledge and experience Flora brought to the classroom.

As a senior case manager with Queensland Corrective Services, Flora’s practical insights and firsthand experiences were invaluable in helping her students, including William, gain a realistic and comprehensive understanding of the justice system.

Flora’s dedication to her students extended beyond the standard curriculum; she was known for her personalised feedback and encouragement, which played a crucial role in William’s academic and personal growth.

“She was very supportive and provided good feedback to help us with assessments. She also got to know us as people, creating a good relationship between her and the class while ensuring her students understood as much as possible about the course,” explained William.

Reflecting on his time at TAFE Queensland, William credits Flora’s guidance and the course’s practical approach with providing him an early advantage in his pursuit of a policing career.

The exposure to real-world scenarios and industry-relevant skills equipped him with the confidence and knowledge needed to excel in his current training at the Queensland Police Academy.

After graduating from Browns Plains State High School in 2023, William is now on track to graduate as a police constable in early 2025, becoming a police officer at 19.

He continues to draw on the foundation laid during his time at TAFE Queensland, crediting the skills and the instrumental guidance from Flora that prepared him for his policing career.

"I see myself in the Queensland Police Service, hopefully as a dog handler in the dog squad, where I can make a meaningful impact," said William.

His journey from a quiet student at Loganlea campus to a soon-to-be police dog handler is a testament to the transformative power of education and dedicated mentorship.

TAFE Queensland is proud to have been a part of his journey towards achieving his career dreams.
