Channel’s nursing dreams unlocked

Nineteen-year-old Channel Ada always knew she wanted a career making a difference. However, it was her first nursing placement that revealed the true pull of her calling.

“During my first placement I had such a rewarding feeling knowing I've made a difference in someone’s day, no matter how small,” said Channel.

“Even when I thought I wasn’t of much help, just having a short conversation with someone could bring a smile to their face.”

Channel’s journey into healthcare began in her final year of High School when she enrolled into the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at the Southport campus as part of the TAFE at School program.

“I felt supported from the start, and the enrolled nursing pathway seemed like a great way to get my foot in the door.”

Throughout the Diploma of Nursing, TAFE Queensland students complete multiple clinical placements, which Channel said were invaluable to her learning experience.

“Nothing will fully prepare you for the realities of nursing until you’re out there, but TAFE Queensland provides a strong foundation,” she said.

“The practical skills I learned during residential school blocks and through the simulations helped me feel more confident. By the end of each block, I found myself thinking more like a nurse.”

Her hard work paid off when she secured her first job as an Enrolled Nurse in an aged care facility shortly after graduating.

“During my final placement, a nurse I worked with told me she was impressed with how much I’d grown in just four weeks. Hearing that gave me the confidence to apply for jobs, and I ended up landing a position at the same facility.”

Now, as an Enrolled Nurse, Channel is driven by the belief that nursing is more than just providing medical care.

“Caring for people at their most vulnerable is truly an honour. Being someone they can trust means so much. We’re not just treating their condition; we’re helping them feel safe and supported through some of the toughest moments in their lives,” she said.

Channel is excited to continue her healthcare education by pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse. Thanks to the State Government's Fee-Free funding, she was able to study her diploma without incurring any debt.

“Studying the diploma at no cost allows me to enter the Bachelor program completely debt-free, relieving the stress and burden of significant student loans. Plus, I’ll have one year of credit towards my three-year degree,” she said.

Her advice to anyone considering studying nursing at TAFE Queensland?

“Just do it. You’re not losing anything by trying, and the outcome is so rewarding. You’ll gain so much life experience through it all.”
