Brisbane hosts WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition

Over 200 competitors will descend on the region, competing in 60 skills categories throughout multiple TAFE Queensland campuses during the one-day event.

Competitors across construction and building technology, creative arts, floristry, graphic design technology, information and communication technology, and social and personal services will all showcase their skills in the fully-equipped facilities at the South Bank campus.

Fashion competitors can also conceptualise, design, and finish garment patterns with full access to the Fashion Centre of Excellence at the Mt Gravatt campus.

The Grovely campus, known for its horticulture, landscape design, rural operations and turf management, will host the landscape construction competition, while bricklaying is being held at the Caboolture Campus.

Brent Kinnane, TAFE Queensland Brisbane General Manager, is delighted that competitors can put their best foot forward during each competition, using Brisbane’s world-class facilities and equipment.

“Our campus facilities are among the best in Australia, and by hosting these young Queenslanders here, they will have everything they need to showcase their technical skills,” said Mr Kinnane.

“For example, our jewellery workshops are home to casting and polishing machines, a hammering room and bespoke workstations and industry tools providing the same facilities used in industry.”

“Likewise, our fashion design workrooms are fitted with industrial-standard sewing machines, overlockers, industrial irons, and cutting tables where competitors can bring their patterns to life,” he explained.

Regional competitions are pivotal for WorldSkills Australia, as they provide a competitive and supportive forum for young trainees, apprentices and students to test their skills.

They bring competitors and expert judges together, showcasing their technical skills and talents as they vie for a place at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships in 2025.

Utilising TAFE Queensland’s world-class facilities and equipment, competitors will demonstrate their trade skills by finishing a project within the allocated time, testing their abilities, and benchmarking themselves against each other.

Under the watchful eyes of expert industry judges, competitors are assessed on their knowledge, practical skills and employability attributes as they complete their assigned tasks.

Successful Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners may become eligible to progress to the WorldSkills Australia National Championships, Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competition, in Brisbane in June 2025.

Mr Kinnane also said hosting the WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition and showcasing young Queenslanders' talents highlights the significance of Vocational Education and Training in shaping the state’s future.

“It’s a cause for celebration to be hosting WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition in our amazing facilities, and we hope they help make each competitor make this a competition to remember,” he continued.

“Vocational Education and Training plays a crucial role in equipping individuals with practical skills and preparing them for the ever-evolving workforce.”

“These competitions help to ensure students graduate job-ready and capable of assisting employers in innovating and growing their businesses, contributing to their communities, and helping grow our economy,” Mr Kinnane concluded.

The WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition is held biennially as part of the WorldSkills Australia organisation, with winners going on to represent Queensland at the WorldSkills National Competition and potentially Australia at the WorldSkills International Competition.
