Australia provides Kenneth with a promising engineering career
International student Kenneth Rowley is an excellent example of the transformative power of practical education and industry connections.
After completing high school in Papua New Guinea, Kenneth sought opportunities to further his education in Australia.
He and his family's search led him to TAFE Queensland because of its reputation for its hands-on and practical learning approach and robust industry ties.
Upon commencing his Associate Degree in Civil Engineering (HED001), he was blown away by how the course was advancing his learning and positioning him to join the engineering front lines of infrastructure projects.
"TAFE Queensland’s hands-on training has been life-changing for me. The practical learning approach and industry connections helped me secure a job before finishing my course," Kenneth said.
This specialised technical qualification equipped Kenneth with the skills to work in construction, mining, transportation, and government industries.
Throughout the program, he developed expertise in civil and structural engineering technologies, gaining practical knowledge in drafting, modelling, project management, and estimating.
His experienced instructors guided him through hands-on projects that meet modern industry standards, preparing him to take on real-world challenges.
"My skills have improved dramatically thanks to the practical projects and advanced technology I got to work with. I feel confident and well-prepared to take on real-world engineering challenges," he continued.
Before he completed the course, he was so confident in his skills that he felt ready to begin his engineering career, so Kenneth sent out his resume to gain work experience.
By the end of his second semester, ADG Engineering employed him part-time as a Junior Design Technician (Structural) on his student visa, allowing Kenneth to apply his skills in using advanced technology packages for drafting in a real-world context.
Balancing work and study has been challenging, requiring effective time management to excel in both areas; however, Kenneth has thrived, demonstrating his dedication and capability.
Now, in his final semester, he plans to continue working with ADG Engineering and is considering pursuing a full degree.
ADG Engineering will also help Kenneth obtain a visa to continue his post-study employment once he's graduated.
Kenneth has thoroughly enjoyed his course at TAFE Queensland, finding the experience enriching thanks to TAFE Queensland’s hands-on training and supportive classmates and teachers.
He particularly values the industry evenings his teachers and academic staff organised each semester, which provide excellent opportunities to network with industry professionals.
"The support from my teachers and classmates has been incredible. They’ve made the experience so much richer, and I’m ready to continue my studies knowing I have a strong foundation," said Kenneth.
"The industry events organised by TAFE Queensland have been fantastic. I’ve been able to network with professionals and build relationships that have helped shape my career."
Securing a job early in his course has been a significant milestone, setting Kenneth up for future success in his chosen career path.
His journey is a testament to the importance of practical learning and industry connections in shaping the engineers of tomorrow.
"Thanks to the support of my family and TAFE Queensland’s amazing training, I’m not just prepared for my future - I’m excited about it. I’ve gained the skills, experience, and confidence to succeed in engineering, " Kenneth concluded.
His achievements reflect the high standards and supportive environment TAFE Queensland provides, making it a preferred choice for aspiring engineers worldwide.
