Take the next step in your electrical career with this post-trade qualification. Develop the specialised skills and knowledge needed to work in electrical instrumentation and control.

The electrical industry being one of the largest special construction industries in Australia. There is high demand for qualified workers in this industry with over 50,000 job openings expected over the next five years.

In this course you will develop a basic understanding of instrumentation and the everyday role of installation, basic calibrating, and communication. You will learn how elect, install, commission, fault find, and maintain electrical and instrumentation equipment. Our teachers are qualified tradespeople who have strong industry relationships and are experts at passing their knowledge on to you.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as an instrumentation and control technician or tradesperson. You will also be well prepared to continue your studies in this area.

Entry requirements

The entry requirement for this qualification is:

  • UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician

or

  • a current ‘Unrestricted Electricians Licence’ or its equivalent issued in an Australian state or territory.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.

This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary:

Important information

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills subsidised price, you must:

  • hold an electrical trade qualification (Certificate III) and may already hold a Certificate IV or higher level qualification (evidence must be provided prior to enrolment)
  • be aged 15 years or over, and no longer at school
  • permanently reside in Queensland
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
